Valluvar Kottam: (2 Km) Established in 1976, the Valluvar Kottam honors the acclaimed Tamil Poet Thiruvalluvar, whose classic work, the Kural, is reputed to be about 2000 years old. The Valluvar Kottam replicates ancient Tamil Architecture with the 1330 verse Kural inscribed on panels and depicted in contemporary art.
Egmore & Central Chennai Govt. Museum: (5 Km) This museum well worth visiting. The main building has a fine archaeological section representing all the major South Indian periods. The bronze gallery has a superb collection of Chola art. San Thome Cathedral: (6 Km) Built in 1504, then rebuilt in neo-Gothic style in 1893, this Roman Catholic church is said to house the remains of St. Thomas the Apostle (Doubling Thomas). A crypt can be entered by a stairway just before the altar.
Fort St. George: (10 Km) Built in 1653 by the British East India Company. It presently houses the Secretariat and Legislative Assembly. The 46m-high flagstaff at the front is a mast salvaged from a 17th century shipwreck. St. Mary’s Church: (10 Km) Completed in 1680, this was the first English church in Madras, and is India’s oldest surviving British Church. About 1km west of cemetery in Pallavan Salai.
South Chennai Theosophical Society:(12 Km) Situated on a green wedge between the Adayar River and the Coast, the 250 acres of the Theosophical Society provides a peaceful retreat from the city.
Parthasarathi Temple: Dedicated to Lord Krishna, this beautiful temple was built by the Pallavas. The temple was renovated in the 16th century by the Vijaynagar kings.
Kapaleeswarar Temple: Kapaleeswarar is the oldest temple of Chennai. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva. As religious rituals are rigidly followed in the temple, non-Hindus are not allowed to enter into the main worshiping place. The architecture of the temple could be aptly described as marvellous. |
